Kimagure Orange Road, 88Graph #8 / Akemi Takada
This art print is from the key visual for the Toho OVA, "Kimagure Orange Road White Lovers (1989)," a work which some call "Kimagure Orange Road Winter Season."
The title "White Lovers" harks back to the 1968 French film "Challenge in the Snow/13 Jours en France," a documentary of the Grenoble Winter Olympic Games; in Japan, this film was released with the Japanese title White Lovers.
On the Original, from Akemi Takada
There was this old foreign movie, "The Girl on the Motorcycle," that featured a beautiful young girl who didn't wear anything beneath her leather motorcycle suit. It left such a strong impression and inspired this drawing. It's a composition that contrasts the icy snow and Madoka's fiery emotions; the rather graphic layout is something I may not be able to draw today.
Can you tell what Madoka's heart is saying?
On the Art Print, from EDITION88
For this work, we spent most of our time on skin tone. We completed the background and the red tone of her ski wear early on, but the skin tone required very delicate adjustments using inks in red tones and yellow.
